D3IQ: State-based Control

State-based Control is an automation design philosophy that recognizes that processes have identifiable states. The control system can nearly always be the best operator to keep the plant running within those states and during state transitions. However, it’s not a new concept; it’s drawing much attention lately, as it’s the basis for the emerging ISA-106 standard (Procedural Automation for Continuous Processes). There are many advantages to using state-based control, the foremost being that it dramatically reduces the number of operator actions required. The other is that state-based control can drive optimization from the state control engine. It’s an excellent control philosophy that leverages the power of the D/3® to bring high-level automation to your process.
